Interested in Self-Defense? Welcome to FEMA. Women and girls know that choosing to take self-defense is one of many ways to take care of ourselves. Our school’s mission, To Empower Women and Girls so they May Walk in Peace, guides both our martial arts training and our self-defense classes. The Five Fingers of Self-Defense is a curriculum that emphasizes trusting your intuition, deepening your awareness, addressing scenarios and situations that range from irritating to life-threatening, understanding the natural weapons and targets that everyone’s body has, as well as sharing a wide range of resources for advocacy, education, healing and self-care.

We are a collaborative partner within the women's self defense movement. Our classes are taught by women for women and girls in a safe and powerful space. We teach with the philosophy that everyone who walks through the door has their own toolbox for self-defense and wellness. FEMA facilitates a process by which every participant can add to that toolbox, as well as being given the opportunity to share some of the unique and creative lessons that each participant has, based upon their own life experiences.

The Five Fingers of Self-Defense are:

Mind - Use your mind to assess, trust your intuition, practice awareness drills, stay centered, think through choices and options, plan, etc.

Voice - Use verbal and non-verbal communication skills to de-escalate a situation, give clear commands, set boundaries, distract, etc.

Escape - Learn all different ways to re-position/escape from grabs, inappropriate touch, how to shift/balance/re-redirect energy, etc.

Fight -  Learn the natural weapons and targets on everyone's body.  Learn how to respond, if necessary, when on your feet, and also on the ground.

Tell - Tell your story, give descriptions, discuss strategies, honor the past stories of women, celebrate present moment victories and success, look forward to ongoing health and wellness.
